CD Review: Jessie J

Who You Are (Universal)

Buzzing British singer and "Party in the U.S.A." co-writer Jessica Cornish doesn't have much personality. And the total lack of humor on her debut album make comparisons to Lily Allen and Kate Nash seem lazy. But once you get past the awful album opener and first single "Price Tag," Who You Are improves considerably. Unlike so many other recent stabs at Lady Gaga-style bionic pop, Jessie J actually sings, and often to great effect. In fact, very few singers have used their voices like this in years and sustained the sort of pop magic Jessie J achieves here. "Big White Room," "Who You Are," and "Nobody's Perfect" show off her huge voice, never overshadowing the songs the way, say, Christina Aguilera's often does. Besides, a personality would only get in the way. — Dan Weiss
