CD Review: Joan Osborne

Bring It on Home (Saguaro Road)

If you picked up Joan Osborne's 1995 debut Relish expecting it to sound like the album's big hit "One of Us," you were probably surprised to hear that it was more Janis Joplin-style roadhouse R&B than the radio-friendly pop of her only charting single. Osborne has always sung the blues, but she hasn't gotten around to making a purely blues album till now. Bring It on Home features a dozen songs penned by Willie Dixon, Slim Harpo, and Otis Redding, and Osborne settles into them like she's lived among their grooves for years. She doesn't bother reinventing anything; this is a straight-up tribute to tunes — including "Shake Your Hips," recorded by the Rolling Stones on Exile on Main St. — she's known forever. It's not very original, but it smokes all the same. — Gallucci
