CD Review: Ke$ha

Cannibal (RCA/Kemosabe)

For most of 2010, Ke$ha has hosted a crass alternative to Lady Gaga's Andy-Warhol-meets-Björk costume party, drinking away the recession in the hit "TiK ToK" and indulging a schoolgirl fantasy in "Mr. Watson." On this nine-song follow-up EP to Animal, Ke$ha flaunts her lack of growth, taking Hall & Oates' "Maneater" to its literal extreme in the title track without even bothering to develop a punch line. And "C U Next Tuesday" is a kiss-off disguised as an airy ballad — a tired device by this point. Only the rambunctious "Grow a Pear" travels outside of the comfort zone to pursue its target. "I signed up for a man-bitch; you are just a bitch," Ke$ha sings. "I just can't date a dude with a vag." Is it coincidence that Cannibal's funniest cut also gets its best melody? Here's hoping all of her material rises to this level. We could use a foul-mouthed pop comedian. Dan Weiss
