CD Review: Santigold

Master of My Make-Believe (Atlantic)

The artist formerly known as Santogold doesn't mess around when it comes to targeting genres. Her past gigs — as a record-company rep, soul-pop songwriter, and punk singer — powered 2008's self-titled debut, which dabbled in everything from electronic and new wave to hip-hop and reggae. Santigold's follow-up LP is a little more cohesive, but it still steers off course from time to time, thanks to production by such diverse bedfellows as Diplo, TV on the Radio's David Sitek, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner. The best songs refuse to give listeners an easy way in or out: from "Go!"'s early '80s synth-bop to the skittering art rock of "Disparate Youth" to "Big Mouth," which sounds like M.I.A. on helium and caffeine. Master of My Make-Believe will leave you dizzy from all the jumping around. Not that we're complaining. — Michael Gallucci
