CD Review: School of Seven Bells 

Disconnect From Desire (Vagrant)

When School of Seven Bells formed three years ago as a side project for Secret Machines guitarist Ben Curtis, the idea was to focus on lyrics, with the music as a secondary feature. But the trio's 2008 debut, Alpinisms, was a triumph of electro dream-pop, an ethereal wash of sound punctuated by occasional guitars and solid structure. Disconnect From Desire is more of the same, just amped up a notch or two. Twin singers Alejandra and Claudia Deheza are less of a textural element this time around, and Curtis rises above the mechanical pulse of the beats by mixing some prog into the indie-dream stew. Disconnect From Desire swells with passionate tribal elements, folding in ephemeral folk-pop and dramatic electronic-pop orchestrations along the way. It's a seamless translation of the Bells' influences into their own singular methodology. Brian Baker
