CD Review: Screaming Females

Ugly (Don Giovanni)

It's hard not to compare Screaming Females to Sleater-Kinney or the new band where two-thirds of Sleater-Kinney ended up, Wild Flag. That's because the New Jersey trio (disclosure: not all of them are female) play a turbocharged version of grrrl-punk that tears and shreds at the very core of indie rock and your perception of what it's supposed to be about in the '00s. Their fourth album is all shades of tough, aggressive, hostile, and defiant. Frontwoman Marissa Paternoster — whose contorted vocals and guitar often gouge into each other — rarely pulls back on Ugly. Once she gets going, you'll just want to step aside and don't get in her way. "I'm a rotten apple," she sings proudly on "Rotten Apple," letting you know exactly where you stand with her. — Michael Gallucci
