CD Review: Shit-Box Jimmy

Alive at the Door

(sbj.stereokiller.com)

The latest album by this Cleveland's "drunk 'n' roll trio" was originally released on cassette tape. But if you tossed your Walkman or boombox years ago, don't fear: Alive at the Door, despite a tiny title change, contains the same no-frills music. Shit-Box Jimmy don't come with any gimmicks — or fancy production tricks, for that matter. But in an era in which over-glossed rock music is the norm, Alive at the Door provides a much-needed back-to-basics outlet for those whose tastes run a little more raw. From "Black Eye"'s sludgy guitar and bass assault through the dark but quirky "The Diplomat," Shit-Box Jimmy's minimal indie rock recalls a twisted mix of Nirvana, the White Stripes, and Modest Mouse. — Eddie Fleisher
