CD Review: Solipsist

Extinction Protocol

From the very start of this six-song EP, this Cleveland metal band sets the stage for a brutal and rewarding experience. And on "Steal the Sun," Solipsist reveal just how interesting they can be at times, relentlessly twisting and turning until breaking into a relative smooth interlude. "The Bringers of Eternal Sleep" shows off even more, as singer Noah Buchanan hits a potent mix of growling and clean vocals in an amazingly short amount of time. But it's the closing track, "Ghosts of Remembrance," that gives Extinction Protocol its depth. At nearly half the speed of the preceding songs, it's an apocalyptic and brooding cut that makes a perfect lead-in to the dark and acoustic hidden track buried at the end. – Ben Gifford
