Cereal Killer

DJ's jams stay crunchy<\!s>.<\!s>.<\!s>. even in milk!

Even DJ Capt’n Krunch laughs at her stage name, which she cribbed from the breakfast cereal. But the native Brit is all business when she spins tunes from her 40,000-song catalog at Muggs. As the host of Friday Night Karaoke and a Saturday-night dance party, Krunch caters to requests -- from Top 40 and Motown to disco and swing. “I read the crowd and go from there,” she says. “Whatever works, I go with it.”

Krunch moved to the U.S. in the '80s, but she didn’t start DJing till 2003, when her roommate gave her a mixing board and a pair of headsets for Christmas. “I’m still a baby in this business, and I’m always learning from other DJs and how different their tastes are,” she says. “The best part about it is when I see people having a great time -- and I’m the one who’s creating it. It’s a great feeling.” Still, Krunch says she constantly surprises audiences -- which assume she’s a man, based on her stage name. “They see I’m a girl, and they’ll say, ‘You’re Capt’n Krunch?” she laughs. “Can you imagine what they’d say if I called myself Cocoa Puffs?”
