Chris Scruggs

With Robert Cornelius and Gene Pool. Saturday, August 12, at the Beachland Tavern.

Crack open a can of Chris Scruggs rockabilly brew, and you're liable to get knocked on your ass. As the grandson of fabled banjo picker Earl Scruggs, son of country queen Gail Davies, and one-time frontman for Tennessee twang-rockers BR549, Scruggs has refined his recipe of honky-tonk boogie blues, using both fire and sweet water. "I might get up on stage and play a bunch of slow songs and waltzes, and I might get up onstage and scream into the microphone and kick over the amp," says Scruggs, speaking from Nashville. "People need to come and incite."

This Nashville-born Buddy Holly (geeky glasses and all) will belt out foot-stomping, retro-rockabilly gems from his 2002 debut Honky Tonkin' Lifestyle, classic covers from the likes of Hank Snow and Bill Wills, and maybe an alt-country BR549 tune like "Tangled in the Pines." Scruggs also plans on offering up a few shots from his latest record (currently in production in Tucson). It's a new brew of bubbly roots rock that sounds like Wilco soaked in Southern Comfort. Bottoms up.
