If “couch surfing” conjures up images of disheveled slackers too deranged to make motel reservations, think again. Turns out, couch surfing is a well-orchestrated international travel movement, complete with regional chapters, password-wielding members, and community “ambassadors.” In Cleveland, that job falls to Andria Trivisonno, who is charged with promoting the organization and positioning her hometown as a destination for fellow travelers. Which brings us to this weekend’s Cleveland Couch Crash, a three-day party that aims to show off the city as a fun place to sleep on someone’s sofa. “A lot of the bigger chapters have been doing crashes for years,” says Trivisonno. “Now that our chapter has grown to nearly 700 members, we figured it was time to show off our own amazing assets and give people a chance to know the city first-hand.” Open to members and non-members alike, the crash kicks off Friday June 8 with a welcome party at an Ohio City home. Saturday, attendees reconnect at breakfast at the West Side Market before heading out on their choice of four seven-hour tours to gems like the Rock Hall, Lake View Cemetery, and Great Lakes Brewing Company. That’s followed by dinner on Whiskey Island and a pubcrawl. Sunday is for group breakfast and goodbyes. Trivisonno says the response so far has exceeded expectations, with more than 100 locals and out-of-towners already locked in. The camaraderie and couches are free of charge; admission to tour sites and restaurant meals will cost you. Members can RSVP via the website, where full details reside; nonmembers should drop Trivisonno a note at atrivisonno@gmail.com and let her know you’re coming. “We’re super excited. It should be a fun weekend!”
