Cleveland Metal Fest

With State of Conviction, 13 Faces, Allout, and others. Friday, August 26, and Saturday, August 27, at Peabody's.

At every annual Cleveland Metal Festival, Northeast Ohio's finer wrecking crews try to tear down Peabody's, brick by brick. This year's lineup is a steal -- $10 for a weekend pass. Headlining Friday's show is State of Conviction, the 1990s hardcore band featuring Jason Popson, formerly J. Mann of Mushroomhead and currently frontman of the Alter Boys. Keelhaul's Aaron Dallison will step in on guitar. Supporting acts include Akron's Facemaker, a quintet that proudly describes itself as "the Deftones meet Korn, with a splash of Nirvana."

Cleveland metalcore heroes 13 Faces will headline Saturday night's show, dusting off favorites and previewing material from their forthcoming sophomore album. Also standing out on the bill is Hellbent, a group of Pantera-influenced Canton crushers who have nicknames like "the Hoof" and "Whoremouth." But the big news of the night is the release of Progress, the second CD from hardcore duo Allout. Each of the 20 songs is an escalating shout-along with a bulldozer riff, and the disc could be the city's best underground metal album of the year. Funny in an S.O.D. kind of way, Progress is filled with the kind of mature rage brought about by bad jobs, poor customer service, and overdue bills. Like Beavis and Butt-head, the band probably won't ever get credit for being as smart as it really is, but if you want to argue the point, they have four boots with your name on them.
