Cleveland Screaming II

Saturday, July 1, at the Jigsaw Saloon.

Celebrating the heritage of blood-on-the-knuckle, beer-on-the-shirt Cleveland punk rock is the welcome Cleveland Screaming concert series. The latest installment highlights the '80s hardcore scene -- which had as much influence on the city's current crop of bands as Black Flag and the Ramones combined -- featuring Numbskull, Spike in Vain, and the Dark.

No one in attendance is going to gain any IQ points -- this is raw, primitive dude-rock: angry, hyper, and a little too young for its age. Numbskull gained its reputation opening for the likes of the Dead Kennedys, tearing up the old Peabody's before tumbleweeds outnumbered drunks on Old River Road. Spike in Vain released one record, Disease Is Relative, that is still the record collector's white whale. The Dark, featuring scene figurehead Tom Dark (Knifedance, Stepsister), was a group of teenaged miscreants hellbent on making the loud, ugly music they weren't getting elsewhere and scoring a slot on the legendary Cleveland Confidential compilation. All three bands are converging, older and maybe wiser, to celebrate the history -- and there's a pierogi-eating contest to boot.
