Community Service

For 25 years, the East 185th Street Festival has been one of the area's biggest and best summer events. This year, the community bash is getting back to the basics. That means more displays from homegrown merchants, who will line an entire mile with handcrafted clothing, artwork, and more. All the usual fair attractions are here, including kids' rides and games, but the heart of the four-day event (which wraps up today) remains the food and music. There's Slovenian sausage, Italian pasta, and Asian egg rolls to sample. Music will be provided by local rock band Intense, and there will be plenty of polka music as well (the festival originally began as a polka celebration). There's also a traveling zoo, strolling jugglers, and a 1 p.m. parade for little ones.
Thu., Aug. 3, 5-10 p.m.; Fri., Aug. 4, 5-11 p.m.; Sat., Aug. 5, 1-11 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 6, 1-10 p.m.
