Conan the Librarian

Book club explores the finer points of the barbarian.

Fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger's breakout role will love tonight's session of In Other Worlds, which features discussion of Robert E. Howard's The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian. Lakewood Library's monthly book club, the group meets on the last Monday each month to discuss sci-fi and fantasy lit with host and "resident barbarian" Nick Kelley. Tonight's offering was written in 1933 and contains 13 short stories about the muscle-bound Conan (whom Ah-nuld portrayed in a pair of '80s movies). Tales include "Phoenix on the Sword," which recounts an assassination attempt on Conan after he seizes control of a kingdom; "The Scarlet Citadel," where our hero's empire is threatened by two rival rulers; and "Black Colossus," which finds Conan and his army battling an evil sorcerer.
Last Monday of every month, 7 p.m., 2006
