Clevelanders can get competitive — especially when throwing bean bags at a board. “It’s all about bragging rights, it’s not about the trophy,” laughs Jackie York, spokesperson for Playhouse Square. “When you’re the best at playing cornhole, it means something in this area!” That goes a long way toward explaining the the popularity of the annual cornhole tournament on Star Plaza. It’s also why organizers strictly enforce official rules, right down to the size and weight of the bean bags. “This is not playing with a beer in your hand,” say York. “This is all legit.” More than 16 businesses are fielding teams for the lunch-hour tournament; outdoor play begins today from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and continues Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays through September 4. If you aren’t on a team, you are still welcome to come down to Star Plaza and cheer on the competitors. Championship matches are set for September 7 during the Playhouse Square Block Party.
