Creature Comforts at the Zoo Staff Pick

When: Sat., Aug. 11 2012
Phone: 216-661-6500
Price: $12.25/$8.25
Just like you, the critters at the Cleveland Metro Parks Zoo need to kick back and get a little crazy every now and then. During today’s Creature Comforts program, you can see what constitutes fun for the furred and feathered set. (Hint: papier-mâché prey, hidden treats, and bungee cords are high on their list.) “Animals that are regularly exposed to human contact don’t really have to forage for their food or outrun predators,” explains zoo spokesman Joe Yachanin. “Their basic needs are taken care of, so they need to be mentally and physically stimulated in other ways. That’s through exercise or play, and it’s important for them to maintain good health.” Today’s visitors will receive a schedule detailing the assorted animal-enrichment activities happening at various exhibits; from there, it’s a self-guided experience. Also planned: a visit from the Buckeye Area Regional K-9 unit and special enrichment-themed shows at the zoo’s two theaters. Creature Comforts events are included in the regular zoo admission of $12.25 for adults and $8.25 for kids. Enrichment activities take place between 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Check out the website for details.
