Before you accuse Curren$y of stealing the idea of using the dollar sign in his stage name from pop/R&B singer Ke$ha, it should be known that Curren$y has been around since 2002, and Ke$ha made her debut in 2005 (but that doesn’t excuse the fact that the moniker is still just silly). Though his career began 10 years ago when he signed to Master P’s No Limit Records as part of the 504 Boyz, Curren$y’s solo music was pretty under the radar. However, his career in the past four years has more than made up for the considerable lull. During that time, the rapper has released seven albums and has plans to release three more by next year. Musically, his latest album, The Stoned Immaculate, has tracks that aren’t your typical Top 40 hip-hop. Less geared toward the club, the music features organic bass lines that are jazz-inspired and melodies that are rich and not aggressive. Lyrically, though, it’s the same ball game; most songs are about driving in drop-top cars, hustling, smoking, and taking it easy. But then what did you really expect from a No Limit alumnus? (Sam Mendez)
