Czech-ing In

Jan Nemec’s 1964 debut Diamonds of the Night sought to capture the thoughts of two Jewish men who escaped from a trained headed to a concentration camp. Critics called the film “masterful” upon its released but it would be long before the subversive filmmaker was banned from making movies in his homeland. With tonight’s screening of the movie, the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque pays homage to the director. The four program series, Independent of Reality: The Films of Jan Nemec, includes several of his films, some of which will be shown on new 35mm prints on loan from the Czech National Film Archive. Nemec’s 11-minute short A Loaf of Bread, a movie based on a story by Czech writer Arnost Lustig, starts things off tonight at 5:30 at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. The series continues on Sunday at 4 p.m. with a screening of Nemec’s Pearls of the Deep. Tickets are $10. (Niesel)
