Damien Jurado

When: Mon., June 12, 8:30 p.m. 2017
Price: $15 ADV, $18 DOS
Kicking off an expansive 50-state tour right here in Northeast Ohio is probably the best way to start a journey like that. Damien Jurado nailed when he chose, randomly, Ohio and Indiana to begin this major undertaking, something that he’s been wanting to do for a while. The tour promises intimate shows, and tonight’s Beachland gig will surely satisfy. Jurado has been releasing music for more than two decades, including last year’s Visions of Us on the Land. On that one, Jurado blends more sweeping electronic rhythms and reverb against his stripped-down acoustic style of songwriting. “Sam and Davy” might have been a quieter song back in the day, but here Jurado envelopes verse and chorus with gentle swirling effects and the low-wattage background static that inspires another layer of emotion beyond his vocals. We were introduced to Jurado’s music with the late-90s roadside contemplation, “Ohio,” which also boasts a great remix by filious. (Sandy)
