Dan Deacon

Spiderman of the Rings (Carpark)

Dan Deacon NBC affiliate electro-pop
Thousands are flocking to YouTube to check out a video of Dan Deacon demonstrating his bizarre act on an NBC affiliate. Exactly how Deacon wormed his way onto the Savannah, Georgia news program is anybody's guess. With his fly down, Deacon rocks huge glasses while messing with Casio keyboards, samplers, and other electronic gizmos. Of course, a square reporter looks on in utter confusion.

It's a hilarious spectacle for sure, but is Deacon's music worthy of such buzz?

Spiderman of the Rings, his first disc for Carpark, answers that question with a dizzying "yes." Merging beautiful melodies, catchy sing-alongs, and more obnoxious noises than Woody Woodpecker, Deacon's crafted a record that's beyond freaky. It's both electro-pop and free-form chaos -- what bell-bottomed prog rockers would sound like if they scored electronic music for cartoons.

After ingesting tracks like "Wham City" and "Snake Mistakes," you'll hum them for days while pondering their absurdity. Spiderman assaults senses with a genius conflation of annoying and irresistible.
