Dance of the Decade

A top modern-dance troupe makes a long-awaited return.

After a more than 15-year absence from the area, Israeli troupe Batsheva Dance Company kicks off Dance Cleveland's fall season. "The opportunity to see them in this country is so rare," says Sally Keyes, director of marketing for Dance Cleveland. "When they become available, we jump."

Batsheva performs just one piece tonight: "Deca Dance," an evening-length compilation featuring the work of artistic director Ohad Naharin. But the piece offers a wide-ranging tour of the dance landscape, from traditional and ethnic to contemporary and "raving modern," says Keyes. "You feel like you're seeing seven or eight companies. Very few companies have such a high level of energy and unique style."
