Deana Carter

Saturday, June 9, at the Beachland.

Nashville's Deana Carter burst onto the country music scene in 1996 with her debut album, Did I Shave My Legs for This? While that wasn't all she wrote, it's been damn near all we've heard from her. Until now. Carter is currently on a 20-city acoustic tour that ends in Cleveland with a show at the Beachland on June 9. The Pedigree Homeward Bound tour features several of her newly penned songs that will be released on a self-produced CD. While a label and release date are still up in the air, one thing is certain: For reasons known only to artist and label, no one expects it to appear on her former label, Capitol Nashville Records. It's not because sales weren't good. They were. Did I Shave My Legs for This? sold more than four million copies, and the single "Strawberry Wine" took the 1997 CMA song of the year award. Though Carter squeaked four top-10 singles out of the freshman cut, the fast train to superstardom was derailed when her second -- and last -- album was released to mediocre reviews in 1998. Despite the lack of radio play, Everything's Gonna Be Alright still went gold. Carter's fans don't mind that she doesn't stand in the footlights with the likes of such crossover stars as Shania Twain and Faith Hill. They obviously prefer the blue jeans and barefoot performances to the glitz of sequins and three-inch heels -- and who could blame them? Carter simply strolls the stage, strumming her guitar, drawing audiences into her pure and simple world. And when she sings a familiar tune like "We Danced Anyway," we all know exactly where she's coming from -- and where she's been.
