DeLarge and in Charge

If you’ve been itching to get “Singing in the Rain” stuck in your head in the most unsettling way imaginable, head on over to the Cinematheque for a screening of Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 classic, A Clockwork Orange. Adapted from the novel by Anthony Burgess, this haunting British dystopian work is narrated by the “charismatic delinquent” Alex DeLarge (Malcolm MacDowell) who chronicles his criminal exploits and the government’s attempts to reform him with a new experimental therapy. Kubrick is a master of the “enduring image” and there are some moments in the film which have become classics in cinematic history. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a watch. Definitely not for the whole family, though, if you know what I mean. The film screens at 7 p.m., and is part of the Cleveland Orchestra’s “Fate and Freedom: Music of Beethoven and Shostakovich” series. (The film’s score is truly dazzling). Tickets are $9. (Allard)
