Burning River Roller Girl Marcie Sandine (a.k.a. Morbid Cherub) says her sport is “100-percent real and 100-percent fun.” The hometown racer was one of the original members of Cleveland’s first flat-track league and has seen it grow to more than 100 players on seven teams. While roller derby used to be a choreographed novelty act, today’s derby is more about athletics. This atmosphere brings players and fans of all kinds to the rink. “We’ve got librarians, doctors, dentists, people from all different professional walks of life,” says Sandine, “even stay-at-home moms.” The evolution of the modern sport is documented in the new film Derby, Baby!, presented by the Burning River Roller Girls tonight at 7 at the Capitol Theatre. Narrated by actress Juliette Lewis, the 95-minute flick helps explain why flat-track roller derby is the fastest growing sport in the world. Come early for a casual meet-and-greet with members of the hometown league. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for kids at the Capitol Theatre box office or the website.
