Dirt Devils

Northeast Ohioan among the country's top BMXers to tear up the earth at North Coast Harbor.

Big air and even bigger tricks rule North Coast Harbor this weekend, when the AST Dew Tour spins into town for the Right Guard Open. BMXers, motocrossers, and skateboarders alike will compete in the second of five national stops on the tour, with Youngstown-area native Anthony Napolitan gunning for his second career Dew Cup on BMX dirt. "Last year, Cleveland was awesome. It was one of the best crowds, and everyone comes out to support the athletes," says the 22-year-old Austintown Fitch High School grad. "Of course, being so close to Youngstown, the family gets to come." Broadcast on both the NBC- and USA-TV networks, the tour draws more than 300,000 fans to gasp at the boarders' and bikers' flips, spins, and moves. Napolitan admits he and his fellow riders relish the challenge. "It keeps us busy through the summer season," he says. "If not for that, I'd probably be riding. But I don't know if I'd be really where I am right now without the tour." Competitors hit the ramps at 2 this afternoon and 1 p.m. tomorrow through Sunday at North Coast Harbor at the foot of East Ninth Street. Tickets are $15 to $35.
