Don Caballero

With Tight Whips. Thursday, April 1, at the Lime Spider.

This is a seminal band re-formed, its drummer the sole remaining original member. No, seriously. But since algebraic time signatures were at the heart of Don Caballero's angular instrumental rock, a couple of factors give DC2004 a better-than-average shot at rocking the Lime Spider.

Drummer Damon Che made his bones in the '80s and early '90s with Pittsburgh's premier golden-age punkers, Half Life, who on occasion could be found at the midpoint between arty and metal. Don Cab, nearer to the arty side, was stretched between Pittsburgh and Chicago, home to guitarist Ian Williams, producer Steve Albini, and the alt-underground label Touch & Go.

After years of gradual lineup changes, Don Cab disbanded in 2001. Williams founded the band Battles with John Stanier of Helmet and Tomahawk fame. Che re-formed Don Cab last year, sidestepping all the problems that the irreversibly bad blood between himself and Williams would have inevitably created, and instead recruited a backing band that includes most of Pittsburgh's math-rock standouts Creta Bourzia. Che says the new Don Caballero is planning another record. For the Creta boys, it'll be one heck of a graduation exam. But until then, the songs remain the same.
