Don Giovanni at Severance Hall

When: Tue., March 22 2011

Our opera scene may never rival Zürich or Vienna, but the Cleveland Orchestra is doing its best to fill the hole in the hearts of local opera lovers. Tonight, in a fully-staged performance from the Zürich Opera, they'll present one of Mozart's most revered works, Don Giovanni, inside the glorious Severance Hall. The performance features several world-renowned singers, including British baritone Simon Keenlyside, winner of Musical America's 2011 Vocalist of the Year award. The opera's storyline follows the young, freewheeling don through a series of exploits and confrontations in two acts, and is considered a sublime blend of comedy and drama. Maybe that's why it has remained one of the world's most popular operas, ranking number seven on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed works in North America. Tonight's show starts at 7 p.m.; additional performances are scheduled for Thursday, March 24, and Sunday, March 27. Tickets start at $71; snag them at the box office or online at clevelandorchestra.com. Severance Hall is at 11001 Euclid Ave. in University Circle; call 216-231-1111 for more info. — Delaney
