Drink of the Week

Mango Fire Margarita @ the Fairmount

Now that we're mostly clear of summer's 100-degree-armpit conditions, patio drinking is back on the schedule. Leading the pack of great places to get sauced in the shade is the Fairmount, well-known among East Side drinkers for its high-powered cocktails crafted by booze scientist Tom Mullady. Secreted out back is the patio, a high-walled amphitheater with a full-service bar and tables. The Fairmount recently reinvigorated its drink selection with summer-appropriate cocktails, the flagship of this fleet being the Mango Fire Margarita ($9). Grounded in tequila, the drink adds fiery chili peppers, fresh Key lime, and mango, all shaken over ice. Walking the tightrope between sweet and spicy, the impact is not limited to taste alone. The final result is a drink that literally blazes in its glass: a neon orange borrowed straight from the Vegas strip. Take one of these margaritas back to your table, and without fail your tablemates will stare wide-eyed and whisper, "What is that?" The Fairmount is at 2448 Fairmount Blvd., in Cleveland Heights.
