Eagles of Death Metal

Peace Love Death Metal (Ant Acid Audio/Rekords)

The bong-clutching, tweaked-out beanbag lifestyle of the '70s seems to have made a big impression on Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme, and while that vibe has wormed its way into all of his various projects (QOTSA, Kyuss, Desert Sessions), it dominates this latest indulgence. A collaboration with his childhood pal Jesse "The Devil" Hughes -- along with a bunch of other stoners who contribute guitar, piano, and devil horns -- these Eagles play kitschy, AC/DC-inspired anthems about lust, rock and roll, nasty ladies, and burning hearts of fire.

Hughes is the composer, lead singer, and guitarist here, so the music differs from Homme's heavier, Black Sabbath-influenced psychedelic mood rock. Also, the Eagles (not death metal at all, by the way) are very silly. "I Only Want You," one of many ass-kicking, '70s-inspired tunes, has Hughes employing a Bon Scott-style falsetto while exhorting some gal not to fall in love with him. This sort of flashback will surely appeal to dirty-haired heathens as well as all those who prefer their rock solid and grimy.
