Camelot. Lerner and Loewe's musical is roughly half masterpiece and half mess. The overambitious Alan Jay Lerner tried to stuff five hundred pages of T.H. White's epic novel into two acts of song, dance, and drama: It's much like turning The Odyssey into a puppet show. Porthouse Theatre's director Terry Burgler takes a crack at righting Lerner's booky sins, and incisive actors like Scott Plate as Lancelot and Paul Fidalgo as Mordred help to balance an uneven evening. As Guinevere and Arthur, Beth Thompson and David Edwards are amiable but bland medieval nightingales, and William Pitt as Pellinore adds a bit of nonsensical spice to the proceedings. Then, of course, there are those glorious songs, like "If Ever I Would Leave You" and "The Merry Month of May," which make the show as flavorsome as a strawberry ice cream soda. Through August 14. Reviewed August 5.
