Feast of the Assumption

When: Aug. 15-18 2012
Phone: 216-421-2995
Price: free admission
Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary has hosted the weekend-long Feast of the Assumption for 113 years. That's a whole lotta feasting. The event commemorates Mary’s entrance into heaven and — what with all the delicious Italian food — carb-lovers may feel like they've passed through those pearly gates too. Feast No. 114 begins on Wednesday with a blend of solemn religious observances and partying in the streets of Little Italy. The festivities — including bands, carnival rides, arts and crafts vendors, and, of course, more pizza, pasta, and pignoli cookies than you can imagine — kick off today at noon and conclude on Saturday night with a candlelight procession and fireworks. Recent feasts have drawn more than 100,000 people to Mayfield Road; needless to say, the street is closed to traffic for the duration and parking can be an adventure. (Here's where that bike could come in handy — assuming you can handle the hills!) Admission is free, but bring along molto moolah for all the tempting eats. A complete schedule of events can be found on the church's website.
