Fiery Furnaces

Brooklyn's Fiery Furnaces must think the end of the CD is nearer than the rest of us do. Since the group's 2003 debut, Gallowsbird's Bark, the Furnaces (Chicago-born siblings Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger, plus a rotating cast of side people) have released three more full-lengths as well as a 10-track, 41-minute EP. And they have another full-length due this October: Widow City will be their first for the Windy City's Thrill Jockey imprint. (Considering the band's unusual knack for label hopscotching -- from Rough Trade to Fat Possum to Thrill Jockey -- the Furnaces must also think the end of the record label is nearer than the rest of us do.)

Don't expect to hear much from Widow City on the current tour. "That album is an autumn affair. This tour finds the group in a summer mood," the Furnaces recently explained in a bizarre note from their "attorney and friend" Bradley Shenfeld, who posted it to the Thrill Jockey website.

Southern California's Dios knows all about summer moods: Nearly all of its stuff sounds like Pavement covering the Beach Boys.
