The palatial new Lakewood Family YMCA begins its popular seven-week Aikido/Taihojutsu martial-arts series tonight. In the Aikido program, classmates treat each other like opponents in need of a little discipline rather than enemies looking for a major ass-kicking. The more aggressive Taihojutsu class allows students to throw, grapple, and strike opponents with hands, feet, knees, and elbows. The fighting style was first taught in post-WWII Japan to help police combat crime. “This training will make you a confident, well-rounded fighter,” says Lindsay Vaughan, the Y’s youth- and family-program director. “You will improve mentally and physically, as well as benefit in general health and fitness levels.”
Mondays, Wednesdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Jan. 3. Continues through Feb. 14
