Film Spotlight: Local Cinemas Offer Up Seasonal Treats

If you're looking for an alternative to whatever crappy Halloween flicks are showing at the multiplex this month, local arthouse theaters have got you covered.

"We will be screening classic horror films, hosting musical performances and creating new beverage concoctions to fit the season," says the Nightlite's Rob Lucas in a press release about the Akron theater's Halloween offerings. "Costumes encouraged!" The schedule includes a screening of Japanese horror flicks House (Oct. 17, 19-23) and Kuroneko (Oct. 23-24). Akron indie rock bands recorded a new soundtrack to the 1924 Austrian horror film The Hands of Orlac (Oct. 18). Tickets to that showing are free at In a special off-site event, the sixth annual Blood of the Freakishly Short Animation Festival shows on Oct. 30 at the Akron Art Museum.

Director John Carpenter's grisly Halloween (Oct. 25, 30-31) completes the schedule. The John Carpenter tribute band Analog Fog will perform at the Oct. 25 screening. "The featured beverage for this evening will be the Great Pumpkin, a tasty brew made of apple cider, ginger brew and rum served from a carved pumpkin," says Lucas, adding that a staff member dressed as villain Michael Myers will be in attendance to greet visitors and pose for photos.

Cleveland Cinemas offers its share of fright flicks too. The Capitol will host 12 Hours of Terror, the fifth annual all-night horror movie marathon. It runs from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, and the price of admission even includes continental breakfast. The Rocky Horror Picture Show screens at midnight on Oct. 25 and at 10 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the Cedar Lee Theatre. You can also see director Danny Boyle's stage adaptation of Frankenstein at 7 p.m. on Oct. 28 and at 7 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

The 1958 classic The Fly screens at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Capitol Theatre as part of the Sunday Classic Brunch and Movie Series.
