Flying Lotus/Thundercat/Teebs

When: Thu., May 16, 8:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $20 ADV, $25 DOS
Jumping in the spaceship and traveling to distant worlds originally dreamt up by the likes of the pioneering experimental DJs of yesteryear, FlyLo has been drippin’ psychedelia upon the waters of avant-garde hip-hop for most of his career. The soundtrack to your bros’ night out at the club this is not. FlyLo’s releases, primarily the critically acclaimed Cosmogramma, are metaphysical road trips down highways paved with dopamine. The way “Computer Face // Pure Being” segues into “...And The Worlds Laughs With You,” a cut featuring Thom Yorke, is simply fantastic stuff. FlyLo’s compositional structures weave among more than a handful of musical traditions, including traditional jazz (He’s the grandnephew of pianist Alice Coltrane and, by association, her husband saxophonist John Coltrane. Also: His cousin is Ravi Coltrane) and more esoteric broadcast signals from far-off planets. Unconvinced? Seal the deal by taking a twilit walk with “Do the Astral Plane” pumping through your headphones. In fact, just walk on down to House of Blues for to catch the live show. Thundercat and Teebs round out the undercard on tonight’s bill. (Eric Sandy)
