  • Freekbass
None other than funk forebear Bootsy Collins christened Cincinnati bassist Chris Sherman with the name that defines not only his band and his style, but his very persona: Freekbass. After meeting Gary "Mudbone" Cooper, a former member of Bootsy Collins's Rubber Band, Sherman was invited to contribute his manic bass style to a track for a Japanese Jimi Hendrix tribute. The song was recorded at Bootzilla Rehab Studios, and Sherman was thus introduced to Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Collins, who ultimately became Sherman's mentor, collaborator, producer, and friend.

In 1998, Sherman recorded an astonishing solo debut, Ultra-Violent Impact, and assembled a band to hit the road. Two years later, Freekbass released the Collins-produced funk wonder Body Over Mind, which helped earn the band its third Best Urban/Hip-Hop Cammy (the Cincinnati spin on the Grammys) in four nominations. The Freekbass live experience is a full-frontal visual and aural assault. Don't be surprised to find yourself shakin' your rump before you realize it's even out of your chair.
