owljohn.comScottish singer-guitarist Scott "Owl John" Hutchison's indie rock band Frightened Rabbit probably isn't famous enough to ensure that his solo debut receives a ton of attention. But that doesn't detract from its significance. The album showcases just what a talent Hutchinson really is — he really cranked this one out, recording it in the order in which the songs were written, giving it a real immediacy. At the same time, it doesn't sound rushed. And it doesn't repeat his work with Frightened Rabbit either. With its brittle guitars and pounding percussion, "Hate Music" is an ominous-sounding tune that sounds like the Smiths if they were to try their hand at heavy metal. It's a terrific tune. The album veers all over the place. "Sounds About Roses" and "Los Angeles Be Kind" are tender tunes — Hutchinson's thick accent gives them a folk feel and makes them come off as drinking ballads. This album won't get much attention, but it confirms Hutchison's songwriting skills. — Niesel
