Futurebirds/Diarrhea Planet/Lost Jon & the Ghosts

When: Sat., May 18, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $10 ADV, $12 DOS
Futurebirds’ latest output - this year’s sophomore cut, Baba Yaga - is a sweetly drifting collection of summertime alt-country goodness. Hailing from the southern rock Mecca of Athens, Ga., the band draws on their city’s musical genome to propel their talents into some seriously kick-ass echelons of the current indie rock scene. The latest album starts off with a series of get-in-your-car-and-floor-it tunes before taking a gentle left turn into “Felix Helix,” a certain highlight from the LP. Carter King’s vocal work, laden with swirling strings and a head-bobbin’ beat, nudge the listener and remind him or her that the oft-cited phrase “psychedelic country” is both effective and exciting in the context of this album. Diarrhea Planet (earning at least a few points with a name like that) and Lost Jon and the Ghosts open the show tonight. (Eric Sandy)
