Bringing in a mingling of musical stylings from around the globe, the Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet promises an evening of dynamic music and entertainment. Alegria, a Peruvian composer and trumpet player, formed the band in 2005 to blend music styles from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean. His long-held interest in the music of coastal Peru and the African roots found throughout prompted a uniquely Afro-Peruvian jazz concept. Pucusana, released in 2010, highlights the band’s vast spectrum of ideas and identities. The album’s title track opens up worlds of living, breathing music; close your eyes and you’ll feel transported. Lucky for you, the band’s in town tonight. The sights and sounds of the Afro-Peruvian Sextet promise to fill the room with fresh excitement and fun all night. (Eric Sandy)
