The New Brunswick-based five-piece Gates is known for doing everything on its own, from recording and mixing to creating the artwork for its latest album Bloom and Breathe. Album opener “Everything That Ever Has Been,” an instrumental, atmospheric song, sets the mood for the emotional ride. Each song could almost stand alone as a poem. It’s easy to tell singer-guitarist Kevin Dye comes from a dark place, and the music helps emphasize it. Though the album might be highly personal, Gates still finds a way to relate with listeners The entire process, from writing, recording, mixing and mastering, took a total of two years. As further proof of the band's DIY approach — Dye even creates the lights that the band uses for the live show. (Adrian Leuthauser)
