Give 'Em a Mint

Juleps mark the day at Derby charity benefit.

A steady stream of mint juleps flows down the hatches of hundreds of horse-racing fans at today's Kentucky Derby Party fund-raiser for the West Side Ecumenical Ministries. To go with the Running of the Roses' alcoholic staple, the agency will also dish out a buffet of tender turkey breast, beef tenderloin, and bread pudding, doused with a Jack Daniel butter sauce. At 5:15 p.m., all eyes turn the tube to watch the Derby's 134th running before partygoers line up for the traditional hat parade, just like in Louisville. "You go there, and there's this entire track of people all dolled up, man. Lord, have mercy!" laughs Judy Peters, the agency's director. "We were looking for something that wasn't one of our usual stodgy benefits." Party from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Great Lakes Brewing Company, 2516 Market Avenue. Tickets are $60.
