Give Trance a Chance

When: Wed., July 24, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: Free
Earlier this month, the Cleveland Museum of Art launched Ohio City Stages, a weekly concert/block party held just across the street from the Transformer Station gallery on West 29th Street in Ohio City. The series kicked off with a terrific performance by Mali husband and wife duo Amadou & Mariam. Tonight at 7:30, Aziz Sahmaoui & University of Gnawa, plays classic Gnawa trance. Sahmaoui was a member of l’Orchestre National de Barbes, perhaps the most famous of Gnawa trance acts, and his solo efforts continue in that tradition. And then at 9:30 p.m. on the lawn next to the Transformer Station, video clips arranged by visual artist Jerry Birchfield will screen. A screening of the Buster Keaton film, Sherlock Jr., will follow. Admission is free, and food and drink will be available for purchase. (Jeff Niesel)
