Aguirre, the Wrath of God is one of the best movies ever made about obsession. Director Werner Herzog, who helmed the 1972 classic, knows the topic well. Not only is the German filmmaker a notorious control freak, most of his movies deal with the subject. Aguirre tells the story of a 16th-century warrior who futilely searches for the fabled El Dorado. It features some of the most gorgeous images ever captured on film. It’s also the best movie in the Cinematheque’s month-long salute to Herzog.
