Great White

Drag queens bring their show to church.

Here's a first: Female illusionists will impersonate Gladys Knight, Tina Turner, and Anita Baker tonight in the party hall of a Catholic church. "Now don't take that the wrong way," laughs Divinity Ariego, organizer of Dressed in All White. "We wanted to have it some place other than a bar. This place was big enough, and it has a huge stage."

The show — which encourages audience members to wear nothing but white — includes performances by a dozen drag queens, ranging from Ariego and Lady Deception to Mahogany Reason and Shari Turner. New York DJ Vic Vixen spins hip-hop and house music, and a panel of judges awards cash prizes to the best-dressed in the audience. To Ariego, it's one of the "classiest" shows of his 13-year career. "Performing is my livelihood," says Ariego, who was crowned Miss Gay Canada International in Toronto last month. "This is what I love to do. I'm going to do it until I can't breathe anymore."
