Hey There, Lonely Boy

Ryan Humbert pays tribute to Roy Orbison

Four years ago, when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum paid tribute to inductee Roy Orbison, they recruited Akron singer-songwriter Ryan Humbert (ryanhumbert.com) for a kickoff party that included Orbison's widow and musicians who worked with the legend. "It was one of the best shows we did," recalls Humbert, a big Orbison fan. "We love those songs and wanted to do the best we could." Since then, fans have asked Humbert to do another show filled with Orbison classics. He's sprinkled songs into his sets from time to time, but this weekend's "Only the Lonely: The Music of Roy Orbison" programs mark the first time he and his band will play entire sets of Orbison. The concerts — which take place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Canton's Metropolitan Centre — are fund-raisers for the Stark County theater company Rainbow Repertory. Humbert will employ a string section to help with the 20 Orbison songs — from his earliest days, to cuts he did with the Traveling Wilburys — he plans to play. "We want it to be about his music and his legacy," says Humbert. "You'll hear all the hits and some obscure stuff. It's a show for everybody." Tickets are $45. Michigan's Hydro-Phonic Records has just released a vinyl version of Fistula's (myspace.com/fistula666) Goat EP, a collection of songs about Cleveland serial killer Anthony Sowell. The record is available in limited-edition gold and glow-in-the-dark colored vinyl.

Five songs from punk band Restless Habs (facebook.com/restlesshabs) show up on a new import compilation, Instant Singles Collection. The rambunctious "Troublesome" and the snotty, Nirvana-like "Finally" can be found on the U.K. label Boss Tuneage's punk and hardcore series.

Singer-songwriter Conya Doss (conyadoss.com) has been nominated in several categories of R&B website SoulTracks' annual Reader's Choice Awards. Doss, who recently released the terrific Blu Transition, is up for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Vocalist.

Metal heroes Chimaira (chimaira.com) are prepping for their Blue Collar Brawler Tour, a 10-city run with Impending Doom, Daath, and This or the Apocalypse that starts in Chicago on November 24. There's no Cleveland date on the tour, but the band will play its 11th annual Christmas show at House of Blues on December 30.

Mr. Gnome (mrgnome.com) are putting the finishing touches on their next album at Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme's Los Angeles studio. The hard-rock duo will launch a tour in Rochester, New York, this week, before wrapping up with a hometown show at the Beachland Ballroom on December 18. The band recently released "Vampires," the third single from its latest album, Heave Yer Skeleton, and made an extended video for the song.Send feedback to jniesel@clevescene.com.
