Australia’s Hiatus Kiyote counts an eclectic bunch of fellow musicians among its fans. Roots drummer Questlove has touted the group and the mix of jazz, hip-hop and techno on its debut, Tawk Tomahawk. It’s easy to see why Questlove would be into the group. Like the Roots, the band doesn’t rely heavily on samples to create its music. “ In the studio, we’re trying to move more toward organic stuff and move toward the analog thing,” says bassist Paul Bender. “I’ve been getting into really early electronic music. There was this cool place and time when synthesizers. I found some amazing shit from the mid to late ’50s, a couple of dudes from the Dutch scene who worked for Philips company. They made some amazing music. Electronic music can sound more like a lost artifact rather than something shiny and clean. We’re all big fans of the grit.” (Jeff Niesel)
