High Times

Look, up in the sky! It's the Air Show!

The sky's the limit at this weekend's Cleveland - National Air Show.

Turbulence is part of the ride at the Cleveland National Air Show, which celebrates 40 years of high-flyin' fare this weekend with air tricks and grounded displays. Real-life military activity usually generates interest in airborne technology, says spokesman J.P. Krainz. "People want to know what the U.S. is flying overseas." Attractions include the U.S. Air Force C-5 Galaxy, the C-17 Globemaster III, and a supersonic B-1B Lancer bomber. Meanwhile, showmen take flight with stunts that make the skies look like a tumbling mat. Jimmy and Kyle Franklin, a father-son flying duo, will perform wing-walking stunts in their 1940 Waco craft -- a souped-up antique that climbs up to 1,000 feet per minute. "It's like being on a roller coaster in a hurricane," says Kyle. Show time is 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday through Monday at Burke Lakefront Airport, 2301 North Marginal Road. Tickets are $16, $14 for kids (ages 5 and under get in free); call 216-781-0747. -- Kristen Hampshire

Beaver Patrol

SAT 9/4

The beginning of the end of summer hits this week, and Cleveland Metroparks marks the occasion with a Holiday Campfire, which also includes a night walk in the woods and a marshmallow roast. "We'll go out on the marsh and see if the beavers or the muskrats are swimming," says naturalist Deb Marcinski. "Obviously, we won't ignore the birds, especially if the herons are still fishing." But keep your hands to yourself, she advises. If you want to know what some of the furry critters feel like, Marcinski will let you touch some of her beaver, skunk, and raccoon pelts. "If we see a beaver, and you could touch him," she says, "this is what he would feel like." It starts at 7 p.m. at the North Chagrin Nature Center's Nature Education Building (off the Sunset Lane entrance to North Chagrin Reservation in Mayfield Village). Admission is free; call 440-473-3370. -- Diane Sofranec

Back to Bases

SUN 9/5

We've often dreamed of playing ball with the big boys, stepping up to the plate, knocking one out of the park, and trotting homeward as we blow kisses to the adoring fans. At Sunday's Tribe game against the Anaheim Angels, kids 14 and younger get to fulfill our wishes by running the bases. It's part of Kids Fun Day, where you can guarantee an appearance by Slider as well as some other child-centered activities. But, really, does it get any better than running the big-league bases? Game time is 1:05 p.m. at Jacobs Field, 2401 Ontario Street. Tickets range from $5 to $40, available by calling 216-420-4487. -- Michael Gallucci
