Holiday of Hate with Cro-Mags/Inmates/Killer of Sheep/Race Riot/Vice

Talk about doing it yourself. The Cro-Mags, the New York hardcore band whose formation dates back to 1981, is touring without the support of a publicist and without anything resembling a press kit. Ironically enough, the band, which is reportedly only playing two shows on this tour, doesn’t need a big PR push to sell tickets. Band founder John Joseph has been the one constant in an otherwise unstable lineup fraught with tension. “I don’t get caught up in the drama,” says Joseph, an advocate of healthy living who has written books about his plant-based diet. “We just go out to have fun and have a good time. I don’t think of it as the crazy rock star fantasy fun. Music is still something I am passionate about. That’s why we still go out and play shows. The bottom line is that whoever is on the tour wants to be out there and they’re chill. I’m not trying to go on the road with anyone causing drama. That makes it unenjoyable. It’s about the message and what we stand for and that’s about it.” In fact, things reached a peak over the summer when bassist Harley Flanagan stabbed two of his bandmates right before going on stage, adding yet another sordid chapter to the band’s history. Joseph says a new album is reportedly in the works, so it’s possible you’ll hear some unreleased songs tonight. (Jeff Niesel)
