New to DVD this week

Roger Corman's Sci-Fi Classics: Attack of the Crab Monsters, Not of This Earth, and War of the Satellites (Shout! Factory) Director Corman's long career includes gothic costume dramas (good but pretentious), trippy LSD parables (druggy but dated), and cheap monster movies (goofy but fun). These three films come from his fun period. All were made in the '50s on shoestring budgets, and all whiz by — two of them barely clock in at an hour. The brainiest is Not of This Earth, about an alien who's harvesting our planet for blood. The wildest is Attack of the Crab Monsters, whose title says all you need to know. Extras include expert commentary, interviews, and trailers for more than 25 Corman movies.

Buried (Lionsgate) — Ryan Reynolds gets trapped in a box for 95 minutes, and you're there with him. Depending on how you feel about Reynolds, that's either an awesome thing or the most tortuous 95 minutes of your life. We'll say this much: There isn't a more claustrophobic movie out this week.

Death Race 2 (Universal) — This straight-to-video prequel to a 2008 movie that nobody saw tells the story behind a futuristic demolition derby where blood and fuel are the main driving forces. Extras include deleted scenes, just in case you want to see how much worse this movie could have been.

Paper Man (MPI) — Jeff Daniels and Ryan Reynolds star in this movie about an unsuccessful writer with an imaginary friend. But the real reason to see it is for Emma Stone's performance as the teen who kick-starts his life. Once again, the star of next year's Spider-Man reboot steals every scene.
